GS1 - Data Quality
What is Data Quality
Data Quality relates to the extent that your item master data is:
- Complete: All the required item master data attributes you need to maintain have been recorded in your systems
- Standards Based: These attributes are being recorded and maintain according to GDSN data standards
- Consistent: Data attributes are aligned across items and also across internal systems
- Accurate: Data attributes values are right
- Time-Stamp: The validity timeframe for your item master data is clear
Within the supply chain, Data Quality ensures not only that internal operational activities but also transactions with trading partners can be completed efficiently, without rework, duplication and unnecessary cost.
A recent study has estimated the total cost of bad data in the Australian grocery supply chain will be AU$1.035 billion over five years!*

The GS1 Data Quality Audit Service
The GS1 Data Quality service is an on-site service focused on the physical inspection of a statistically significant sample set of products, based on the global GS1 Data Quality Framework.
A GS1 Advisor, using state of the art measurement and weighing equipment, will capture accurate weights, dimensions (using the GDSN Packaging and Measurements Guidelines) as and other key item attributes for your selected products.
GS1 uses the very latest equipment to ensure accuracy and correctness
This data is then compared with the item master data for the same products available in GS1net. As part of this process, gaps and problem areas are identified, root cause analysis is conducted and actionable recommendations and drawn and presented.
How long does it take to complete the Audit?
For a company with an average of 100 products, the GS1 Data Quality Audit Service may take 2 – 3 days to complete.
This time includes the interviews, physical product audit, immediate fixes (for erroneous data) and strategic recommendations to aid in long term data quality improvements. (This will exclude any pre-work required)
Do I need to prepare before the Audit starts?
It is recommended that the personnel responsible for supply chain master data read and understand the Data Quality Framework (DQF).
This provides readers with excellent, detailed information that may assist or just confirm, the processes they have in place are best practice. Additionally the DQF provides a medium to long term roadmap for potential improvement, from governance to documentation to training.
The Self Assessment tools, and especially the questionnaire, greatly assist in the understanding of what is required to manage master data to Best-In-Class levels.
