Allocating barcode numbers
Logistics units
The GS1 System can assign unique numbers to identify any shipment of goods that needs to be transported throughout the supply chain. A Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is used as the key to managing and tracking goods throughout the whole warehousing, distribution and transport process. Some shipments consist of pallets or containers of the one product while others could be shipments of either mixed products or single products.
On each case, the shipment receives a unique number and this SSCC identifies that shipment for its lifetime within the supply chain.
The SSCC is an eighteen digit number that follows the Application Identifier (00) and is represented in a GS1-128 barcode.
The method you use to allocate the SSCC will depend on which format of an GS1 Company Prefix you have. For more information on other numbering prefixs see below.
