Pallet Labelling in the Grocery & Liquor Industry
A Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC) is like a licence plate that uniquely identifies each pallet. Retailers require logistic labels with unique SSCCs to be applied to pallets delivered into their distribution centres so that they can be scanned on receipt.
Retailers in the grocery and liquor industry have identified incorrect pallet labelling as a major supply chain headache and it appears to be getting worse. A 2010 industry sample audit found that approximately 44% of pallet labels are not meeting agreed upon industry requirements.
GS1 Australia in conjunction with Efficient Consumer Response Australasia (ECRA) has developed a toolkit to assist industry. Within this pack you will find all the resources you need to get the best out of your logistics labels.
The contents of this toolkit suite are:
- Logistics Labels 2010 Status Report
- Getting the Best Out of Logistics Labels
- A short video on label positioning and application
- Supplier Considerations for Pallet Label Quality
- GS1 Logistics Labelling Service
We strongly recommend starting by reviewing the Logistics Labels 2010 Status Report presentation to get a general understanding of logistics labels, the size of the problem and the intention of the suite of tools that have been developed to assist your business in getting the most out of pallet labeling.
Getting the Best Out of Logistics Labels toolkit should be considered a user manual for retailers and suppliers to the fast moving consumer goods sector. It is not prescriptive and should be read in conjunction with GS1 Australia User Manuals, and the retailers specific requirements. We recommend organisations consider the procedures as part of a review of logistics label procedures and application within your business.
The short video provides real world examples of the positioning and application of the pallet labels and acceptable practices for the Australian market. You may wish to consider using this short video as part of your induction processes.
The Supplier Considerations for Pallet Label Quality provides supplier companies with a list of considerations and basic functionality that can be incorporated into internal quality procedures and standards. There is an opportunity to apply these considerations to your third party warehousing and distribution activities.
A GS1 member service Logistics Labeling Service provides an excellent adjunct to processes and procedures adopted and implemented within organizations. It can be used to:
- benchmark performance
- as an annual verification
- to identify the root causes of non-conformances
